Abstract
To investigate the anaemia found in chronic alcoholics with liver damage, model experiments in mice were performed, lasting from 5 weeks up to 1 year. Four groups were tested obtaining tapwater (controls), 100/o alcohol, tap-water containing small amounts of methotrexate, or methotrexate plus 10% alcohol in tap-water. Alcohol or methotrexate alone induced no haematological changes. When combining both agents, heavy anaemia developed, indicating a synergistic effect of alcohol and folic acid deficiency. Only minimal changes could be observed in the livers of animals receiving alcohol or alcohol plus methotrexate, respectively.
