Abstract
Mice exposed to 750 r whole-body X-irradiation undergo severe hematopoietic damage with massive cellular destruction and depletion. Little cellular restoration occurs, and the animals usually die within 12 days. Cellular depletion of hematopoietic tissue in BUB mice treated with 3 [mu]g of Proteus morgana endotoxin prior to irradiation is similar to that in irradiated control. Hematopoietic regeneration is evident 5 days after irradiation, however, and becomes widespread in the bone marrow and spleen during the second week. Restoration of hematopoietic cells is dependent on reticular cell transformation into hematopoietic stem cells division and differentiation of hemocyto-blasts, and repeated division of immature blood cells.
