Abstract
To the Editor.— The article, "Childhood Poisoning" by Aronow, Paul, and Woolley (219:321,1972) points out the consequences of loose administration of methadone programs but also points a warning to even carefully run programs. Methadone in small doses is toxic to children. A standard 40 mg Disket would probably induce coma in most nontolerant adults. Most clinics require that medication be kept in locked boxes and they devote some time to informing clinic patients of the extreme danger of methadone overdose to small children. Since this article was submitted for publication, a much more potent and less toxic antagonist has been approved by the FDA. This drug, naloxone, (Narcan, Endo) is used in doses of 0.01 mg/kg of body weight and is much safer than nalorphine.
