Abstract
It is possible to derive a simple expression for the electric quadrupole moment of any -state arising in coupling, from the proton configuration , without explicitly setting up the wave function in question. If the given -state occurs more than once, only the sum of the quadrupole moments is obtainable by this method. In principle, it is possible to generalize the theory to higher electric multipole moments.
