Damping at Metallic Interfaces Subjected to Oscillating Tangential Loads

Abstract
The results of experiments are described where the energy loss per cycle occurring at a flat metallic interface subjected to oscillating tangential loads is measured. The effects of the magnitudes of the normal and oscillating tangential loads on this energy loss are observed for various materials. The results presented should be useful to those interested in machine tools or similar structures where the damping occurring in bolted joints is important.
