From victims to victors: Group process as the path to recovery for males molested as children

Abstract
Group counseling for men molested as children can be effective in overcoming their resistance to disclosure and removing other impediments to healing. Group goals and organization, leader characteristics and research implications are discussed. Men molested as children are often overlooked by potential helpers who fail to recognize indicators, routinely assess for sexual abuse, and encourage male victims to seek help and protection (Black & DeBlassie. 1993; Nasjleti, 1980; Nielsen, 1983; Wartel, 1991; Zavodnick, 1989). Male sexual abuse is underreported, and male victims are much less likely to seek help than female victims (Black & DeBlassie, 1993; Briere, 1989; Finkelhor, 1990b; Sgroi, 1982).
