Abstract
Streptomycin sulfate decreased the otoconia number on the otolithic membrane of the utricle and saccule in guinea pigs. The remaining otoconia varied in shape and size, and giant otoconia with multilayered arrangement were observed by scanning electron microscopy. These otoconia contained the normal Ca amount in the form of standard calcium calcite crystal. The lost ones were found attached to some vestibular dark cell surface. In this new position they were irregular, shrunken or fragmented. Their Ca content, measured with an X-ray micro-analyzer, was variably diminished. The dark cells appeared to be actively engaged in Ca ion absorption from the attached otoconia and are considered to be receptacles for the otoconia disposal. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
