Adaptive Control of Design Codes

Abstract
A long-range evolution of a design code (e.g., a building standard) controlled by a code authority is formulated mathematically as an adaptive control process. Rational development of the code corresponds to optimal continuous adaptation to a changing social, economical, and technological environment, maximizing the utilization of resources. The use of these concepts (optimized controlled evolution of codes) by a code authority is illustrated in an example.
