Abstract
Referents used by college students in rating the teaching effectiveness of college professors were examined in two substidies. In Substudy 1, consisting of two classes, randomly assigned students rated against one of the following professor referents: Ideal, Best, Average, or Worst. In Substudy 2, consisting of two classes, randomly assigned students rated against the average of one of the following professor referents: High School Teachers, College and University Teachers, or All Teachers. High reliability estimates obtained in all 14 groups. There were no significant differences in level of ratings awarded to the different formats in either Substudy 1 or Substudy 2.Keywords
