Abstract
The differential cross sections for scattering of 187-Mev negative pions in hydrogen have been observed at six angles. The scattering is well represented by the angular distributions in the barycentric system: π+pπ+p:dσdω=0.81±0.13+(0.35±0.20)cosχ+(3.08±0.38)cos2χ×1027 cm2/sterad, π+pπ0+n:dσdω=1.46±0.24(0.16±0.30)cosχ+(5.63±0.88)cos2χ×1027 cm2/sterad. A transmission measurement of the total cross section gave 63.5±1.6×1027 cm2. An analysis of these data in terms of phase shifts is discussed.
