Abstract
The predicted sheet current which connects the partial ring current and the auroral electrojet in auroral substorms is shown to be unstable against a shear perturbation (kink instability). A consequence of the instability is the deformation of the sheet current into a curtain shape as is visibly observed in auroras. Keywords
