Abstract
An outbreak of psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci in 1 human and psitticine birds is reported in Texas, USA. Signs and gross pathology of infected birds are presented including depression, diarrhea, respiratory distress, liver necrosis, renal inflammation and splenic enlargement. Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of pericardial smears and mouse mortality or morbidity following i. p. inoculation with avian exudates. Increased incidence of chlamydiosis is attributed to failure of quarantine centers to treat infected birds properly with chlortetracycline and importing of illegal birds. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
