Abstract
Once a failure criterion and a rule for conversion of mechanical into thermal energy are established, linear elastic materials can be made to behave, theoretically at least, in a highly anelastic fashion. Such hypothetical materials could be of particular value in the analysis of slow deformation of the earth. Keywords
