Abstract
The theoretical equation for the diffusional deposition of high-dispersed aerosols in model filters, consisting of a system of parallel staggered cylinders at small Re was confirmed experimentally for Pe-values ≥ 2. In “fan” model filters as well as in real filters, the collection efficiency for diffusional deposition is independent of the volume fraction occupied by the fibres in the range 0·01–0·2 and is expressed by an equation similar to that mentioned above, but with an empirical coefficient. The fan model describes satisfactorily the properties of real filters and can be used for the calculation of their efficiency. The ratio of the collection efficiency in a model filter to that in real filters is equal to the ratio of hydrodynamic forces acting on the unit fibre length in these filters.
