Abstract
We argue that because of the large correlation length in most conducting polymers, their electronic properties can be understood semi-quantitatively in terms of a simple effective (coarse grained) model. This description is valid only so long as the effective electron-electron interactions are “weak.” The effect of these interactions have been evaluated perturbatively, and values of the interaction strengths are found which are consistent with recent experiments in polyacetylene, and which are indeed “weak.“Keywords
