Periodontal Disease and Socioeconomic Status in Birmingham, Ala

Abstract
Field study of 2300 residents of Birmingham, Alabama, indicated that crude differences in periodontal disease between white and Negro groups could be explained fully by factors related to socioeconomic status. Of several studied, oral debris seemed to be the most deleterious factor. Population comparisons in periodontal disease studies should be restricted to groups of equivalent socioeconomic status.
