EEG in Febrile Convulsions

Abstract
This paper reviews findings and problems concerning EEG in febrile convulsions, and outlines our classification and pathophysiological concepts. Prospective studies have almost negated the prognostic value of EEG on recurrence of febrile convulsions and subsequent afebrile seizures. A particular problem is the low detection rate of epileptic discharges before age 3, i.e. preferential onset age of febrile convulsions. Repeated and long-term follow-up EEG studies, however, enhance its prognostic value. EEG findings and clinical risk factors have to be considered in the prognostication of febrile convulsions. To clarify this point, long-term systematic follow-up study should be extended beyond adolescence.
