Abstract
Among a small group of mares and foals pastured in an area heavily infested with ticks and where tularemia is endemic in small ground game, one mare and 5 foals developed depression, dyspnea, incoordination and temperatures up to 107[degree]F. Two of these foals died. Necropsy revealed swelling of and small necrotic areas in the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and Pasteurella tularensis was isolated in pure culture from these organs and lungs of each. The foals which survived and some mares showed a transitory rise of only a few weeks duration in antibody titer up to 1:640 against P. tularensis. Keywords
