THE EFFECT OF SODIUM CHLORIDE SATURATION AND ORGANIC MATTER REMOVAL ON THE VALUE OF ZERO POINT OF CHARGE

Abstract
Ten soils having a wide range of surface charge properties and extractable sesquioxide contents were studied. The zero point of charge (ZPC) and its displacement from the zero point of titration (ρi) were measured on untreated samples, on sodium-chloridesaturated samples and on samples saturated with sodium chloride after a portion of the organic matter had been removed. Sodium chloride saturation tended to cause the ZPC and ρi to shift. In most cases, removal of organic matter resulted in an increase in both the ZPC and the ρi. © Williams & Wilkins 1979.
