A morphometric analysis of three species of Carollia (Chiroptera, Glossophaginae) from Middle America

Abstract
Four species of Carollia occur in Middle America. C. castanea is easily identified. C. subrufa, C. brevicauda and C. perspicillata, are more difficult to distinguish. A suite of quantitative and qualitative morphological features that allow for accurate species identification is presented. These characters are amenable to use in the field on unprepared specimens. The realiability of this classification procedure was tested by using an associated set of characters in a discriminant function analysis. A multivariate analysis of variance demonstrated significant differences among the species and between the sexes within each species. An analysis of geographic variation revealed a significant north to south cline of decreasing size in C. subrufa and C. perspicillata. Similar though nonsignificant clinal variation was observed in C. brevicauda.
