Abstract
A configuration interaction calculation for Gd3+ is presented, showing that the lowest order perturbation contributions to the spin correlated crystal field are a similar order of magnitude to those recently postulated by Judd (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.39, no.4, p.242 (1977)) on phenomenological grounds. Keywords
