Abstract
It is generally agreed that writing was invented in Sumer, ancient Mesopotamia and present-day Iraq, and spread from there to other parts of the Middle East such as Egypt. The article reviews an archaic system of notation using tokens that is the direct progenitor of Sumerian writing.Keywords
