Abstract
This paper reports an empirical study of the relationship between defense analysis and the emergence of warded-off mental contents. We shall develop, first, a new and explicit model of how changes in a defense may enable a patient to experience the mental contents he had been warding off by that defense. We shall describe, then, an initial research study in which the fit between theory and observations was investigated in a single case. Keywords
