Abstract
The relative size of the sphenoidal depression occupied by the pituitary body to size of the entire cranial cavity is detd. for large and small, extinct reptiles, birds and mammals. In the fossil giants the relative size of the former may be up to 41/2 times that of the small animals. On the basis of the data and those derived from clinically fresh material, the suggestion is made that hyperpituitarism may have been the cause of giantism in the extinct animals.
