Abstract
Ca salts of 2-keto-D-gluconic and tartronic acids were isolated from cultures of Acetobacter acetosum which had been grown in a medium containing glucose and calcium carbonate. When an aqueous solution of calcium 2-keto-D-gluconate was heated at 100[degree] for 20 minutes with Ca(OH)2 in an atmosphere of N2, calcium tartronate was formed and was isolated in small yield from the mixture of products. By paper chromatographic analysis it was demonstrated that arabinose and ribulose were formed also in this reaction. A scheme of reactions to account for these findings is presented. Keywords
