Abstract
A simple step-index with depressed-cladding single-mode fluoride fibre gives excellent dispersion flattening over a broad spectral range, 1.5–2.9μm. The extrinsic losses due to macrobending, microbending and splicing are also minimised. This design enables the use of fluoride fibres at ̃1.55μm and later can be upgraded to 2.55μm, where predicted losses are significantly less than those of silica fibres at 1.55μm.
