Classic: How to Deal with Overt Aggression

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to help psychiatric nurses differentiate aggressive behaviors that express feelings from those that defend against feelings. Examples are included illustrating the differences between the two aggressive behaviors. Then a description of two nurse-patient interactions are analyzed, applying the theories presented. Nursing actions are described that would maintain a therapeutic interaction when aggression might succeed in keeping the nurse away.
