Abstract
The rate of O2 uptake by resting cells of A. chroococcum, as measured in the Warburg micro-respirometer, may be markedly affected by both the H+ conc. and the chem. constitution of the suspending menstruum. At pH levels approaching 6, or below, the respiratory rate was only a small fraction of that recorded at a pH level of 7. Respiration was still evident, however, at the lowest pH level tested, i.e., 5.5 The addition to the respiratory menstruum of such supplementary cations as Ca, Mg, Ba, K, Na, and NIL. may or may not affect the uptake of O2 depending upon (a) the specific ion, (b) the H+ conc. and (c) the quantity of the ion added. At the lower pH levels Ca exerted a marked stimulatory effect upon respiration; the other ions tested were without effect. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
