Abstract
Synovial fluid removed at intervals from patients with rheumatoid arthritis following the intra-articular injn. of hydrocortisone (compound F acetate) showed no consistent change in total protein. In most instances, there was an increase in viscosity, and an increase in hyaluronic acid concn. Frequently the increase in concn. was not as great as the increase in log of the viscosity, and a somewhat more highly polymerized fluid resulted. These findings, indicating a trend toward normal, suggest that the effect of this hormone is directly upon the cells secreting synovial fluid hyaluronate[long dash]probably the cells of the synovial membrane, and not solely upon blood vessel permeability. Keywords
