Cardiac Metastases in Carcinoma of the Laryngopharynx

Abstract
Case reports are presented of four patients who died of carcinoma of the laryngopharynx with cardiac metastases found at autopsy. A survey of recent literature discloses that about 30% of patients who die of squamous carcinoma of the head and neck have distant metastases. The high rate of occurrence of cardiac metastases in carcinomatosis (about 15%) is reemphasized. This diagnosis should be suspected in dying cancer patients with unexplained circulatory changes. Cardiac metastases are probably present in at least 5% of patients who die of laryngeal carcinoma.
