Abstract
Scanning electron microscopy showed the micropyles of Lytta nuttalli to have a simple but variable external structure, consisting of protruding flaps of chorion that form sloping roofs over cavities in the chorion. The roofs apparently prevent the cavities from being occluded by the mucilaginous secretion deposited over the chorion during oviposition, and may serve as guides to the entrance cavities for sperm deposited within the ring of micropyles. The micropyles of Lytta viridana are believed to be similar to those of L. nuttalli. Keywords
