Abstract
The material is oxidized in the dark at room temp. with Na metaperiodate (0.015 [image] in 0.045 [image] H2SO4) + equal vol. of [image] NaHCO3 or a more concentrated soln. (4x) with a suspension of 2[image] NaHCO3- Excess periodate and inorganic reaction products are removed with Pb dithionate and chromotropic acid reagent added. After standing, the Pb sulfate is removed, the soln. heated in boiling water for 30 min. and the light absorption measured at 570 m[mu]. Conditions for oxidation of carbohydrates are reported. Keywords
