Abstract
A series of total and differential counts of white blood cells was studied in 57 normal pregnancies. Counts and Schilling hemograms were made in a series of 28 patients before delivery and in a series of 29 patients after delivery. The proportion of immature cells to the total number of neutrophilic. leukocytes was calculated for each hemogram to furnish an index of the so-called "shift to the left". In bloods obtained from patients more than 10 hrs. before delivery, the avg. shift to the left was 12.6% and the avg. count was 10,275 white blood cells/cu. mm. In-patients whose blood was obtained less than 10 hrs. before delivery the avg. shift to the left was 24.9% and the avg. count was 13,742 white blood cells/cu. mm. In bloods obtained from patients less than 10 hrs. after delivery, the avg. shift to the left was 29.7% and the avg. white blood cell count was 17,960/cu. mm. Thereafter there was a tendency for the total white cell count to return to normal and for the Schilling differential count to shift to the right. Keywords
