Abstract
Examination of concentrations of several chemical species in a 7.37 m deep pit excavated close to the 1978 summer equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of Athabasca Glacier (2694 m) suggests that: (1) aerosol forms of NO3−, PO43−, and reactive SiO2 entered this area in diluted concentrations compared to values for Edmonton, Alberta, the closest heavily populated area; (2) Fe values were similar to those in Edmonton; and (3) the glacier's yearly net mass balance for the sample area was 1.5 and 2.4–2.7 m H2O equivalent for the 1976–1977 and 1977–1978 mass balance years.Keywords
