Abstract
Various discretizations of the sine-Gordon equation are studied. Hirota's discretization scheme is extended and two alternative discretization schemes are constructed. The associated soliton solutions, Bäcklund transformations, conservation laws, and the inverse scattering equations are obtained. Keywords
