Abstract
By the use of deproteinized skimmilk and a casein hydrolysate, amino-acid requirements for several spp. of streptococci can be demonstrated. Strains of Strep. asalignus, Strep. bovis and Strep. mastitidis required cystine (or cysteine) in addition to at least one more amino acid in the hydrolysate. Treatment of deproteinized skimmilk with fuller''s earth inactivated it for the above streptococci as well as for Strep. liquefaciens. Strep. bovis requires at least 2 non-amino-acid factors: one precipitated by HgSO4, the other not. Much variability in growth requirements was found within the species Strep. bovis and Strep. salivarius.
