Abstract
An introduction to philosophy of science and its relation to psychiatry are presented. Philosophy of science is a philosophical discipline and among its main themes are the epistemology and ontology of scientific theories, ethical problems and scientific enterprises viewed as a whole. The nature of scientific reasoning and various disease models in psychiatry are discussed. Differences between validation procedures in naturalistic sciences (i.e. biology, psychology and sociology) and hermeneutic branches of psychiatry (i.e. psychoanalysis) are stressed. It is argued that important problems in relation to psychiatry as a scientific or hermeneutic discipline can be subjected to a rational analysis when discussed within the frame of reference of philosophy of science.
