Processing strategies for recognition and recall.

Abstract
Presented short paired-associate lists to 183 female undergraduates. Ss were probe-tested by either recall or recognition, but were not informed in advance of presentation of each list what the mode of testing would be. In 2 conditions, the tests were either mostly recall or mostly recognition. There was no primacy in the data from the recognition tests in the recall condition or the reverse condition. Results are interpreted as evidence that Ss process items in a different manner for each retrieval mode. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
