An Electrophoretic Study of Avian Eye-Lens Proteins

Abstract
The starch-gel electrophoretic patterns of the eye-lens proteins of over 1, 400 specimens from more than 400 spp. of birds were compared. Rapid denaturation made it difficult to obtain trustworthy data from specimens collected in the field. Fresh material revealed that avian lens proteins are relatively uniform throughout the Class, although variation is decidedly present. No systematic conclusions were reached but it should not be assumed that the lens proteins are lacking in taxonomically useful variation. Only absolutely fresh material should be used.
