Changes in the mucopolysaccharide composition of bovine heart valves with age

Abstract
Aortic, pulmonary, mitral and tricuspid valves from newborn calves and from cattle 8-10 years old have been analysed for their content of acidic mucopolysaccharides. Hyaluronate, a chondroitin sulphate and derman sulfate were found in each valve. The derman sulfate content of valves from old cattle is higher than that of valves from calves. Each of the valves from old cattle contained less hyaluronate and much less chondroitin sulfate than the corresponding calf valve. Procedures involving the use of Rivanol are given for the quantitative fractionation of hyaluronate and polysaccharide sulfate in less than 10 mg of a mucopolysaccharide mixture.
