Abstract
Five adult patients, 4male and 1 female, aged from 49 to 76 years, were treated by MARS. Indications were liver failure secondary: to extended hepatectomy in 2 cases (patients 1 and 5), to acute severe rejection in 2 transplanted patients (patients 2 and 3) and to exacerbation of end-stage liver cirrhosis due to B virus (patient 4). At the time MARS was started, patient conditions are summarized in table [ 1 ]. Table 1 Baseline characteristics of patients treated with MARS Patient HE Prothrombin (%) Total bilirubin Anuria Creatinine 1 IVb 29 493 yes 305 2 I 21 376 yes 192 3 IVa 20 294 yes 143 4 I 14 409 yes 577 5 IVa 9 210 yes 371 Numbers of MARS sessions were 2, 1, 2, 7 and 1 in patients 1,2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
