10 khz operation of the magnetically delayed vacuum switch

Abstract
Operation of the magnetically delayed vacuum switch in the single pulse rnode has been previously reported along with evidence indicating a rate of recovery suitable for high frequency repetitive operation. In recent experiments the switch has been operated at greater than 10 kHz while switching fractional kiloamp pulses of 250 ns duration at 25 kV. In separate tests, the switch was operated at higher current levels, up to several kiloamps, without degradation in the current waveshape. Extended life tests have not yet been performed, but casual observations of electrode condition following the tests indicates a potential for long life.
