Abstract
The ground state for the fractional quantum Hall effect is investigated variationally for small numbers of electrons in a disk geometry. It is shown that there are no downward cusps in the energy, whereas upward cusps do exist. In the presence of impurities, these cusps give rise to charge-density-wave–type states, but far from the cusps, the ground state is incompressible. Keywords
