Abstract
Clean cubic β-SiC(100) surfaces of four surface compositions ranging from Si rich to Si deficient were prepared by annealing samples both in a Si flux and in ultrahigh vacuum. Gold films of thicknesses ∼1–35 Å were deposited on each of the clean SiC surfaces and the interface studied using Auger and x-ray photoemission. On Si-terminated surfaces, Au–Si alloy forms, and some Si segregates to the surface of the Au film in proportion to its initial surface concentration. On Si-deficient surfaces, however, Au clusters appear, and no Au–Si interaction is evident. Results indicate that morphology and chemical interaction for this system depend on the composition of the top one to two SiC atomic layers, not bulk properties. Keywords
