Abstract
Pituitary tissue from ovariectomized heifers released LH in vitro in quantities similar to those reported in the literature for rat pituitaries. Extracts equivalent to 1/8th and 1/4th of a bovine hypothalamus significantly increased LH release in vitro, whereas extracts equivalent to 1/30th or 1/15th of a hypothalamus were ineffective. Extracts of cerebral cortical tissue were devoid of LH-releasing activity. Synthetic preparations of oxytocin, arginine-vasopressin, lysine-vasopressin, angiotensin II, and bradykinin had no effect on the release of LH from bovine pituitaries in vitro. Luteinizing hormone was not synthesized in vitro under any of the treatment conditions employed. Copyright © 1971. American Society of Animal Science .
