Abstract
A comparison was made of isolates in culture of Rhizophydium granulosporum Scherffel, R. biporosum (Couch) comb. nov., R. chlorogonii (Serbinow) Jaczewski, R. haynaldii (Schaarschmidt) Fischer, R. laterale (Braun) Rabenhorst, and an unidentified species from water. All isolates grew saprophytically on algae and pine pollen and demonstrated great variability in their morphology on different substrates. An evaluation is given of the characteristics currently used for distinguishing species, and criteria of perhaps more discriminating taxonomic value are suggested.
