Abstract
Accumulating data upon the magnitudes of the hydrostatic electrostriction constants Qh in a wide range of solids have been used to demonstrate several simple empirical relationships to other thermo-elastic and dielectric properties. i.e. Qh∝1/ε, Qh∝α2, Qh∝χT where ε is the dielectric permittivity, α the coefficient of thermal expansion and χT the isothermal compressibility. A very simple Born model is used to derive inter-relationships between the required properties, however, to obtain quantitative agreement, the reverse power in the repulsion term must be unrealistically small, indicating the need for a more realistic model. Keywords
