Nature of Attachment Forces in Porcelain-Gold Systems

Abstract
Chemical bonding between gold and porcelain takes place only through interstitial compounds essentially located at grain boundaries in the metal. No evidence is found for meaningful contribution of Van der Waal's forces. The major attachment force in porcelain-gold prostheses without an intervening bonding agent is derived from compression forces generated by differences in thermal expansion of the two phases.
