Quality of Medical Care in Hospitals

Abstract
The study was designed to test the sensitivity, reliability, and validity of a method for assessing the quality of medical care in hospitals, from clinical records. A rating schedule and standards were developed, and evaluation of samples of records in medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology in both teaching and non-teaching hospitals was undertaken. Each record was reviewed independently by two consultants from the appropriate specialty. Findings indicate that quality of medical care is significantly better in teaching than in non-teaching hospitals, and suggest that the general approach used should make possible comparison of quality of care in different institutions, at reasonable cost.
