Abstract
A technique for exploration of the mediastinum is described which utilizes catheerization of the mediastinum from the region of the xiphoid process. Carbon dioxide can be injected via the catheter inserted into the anterior mediastinum to outline the position, shape and size of different mediastinal structures. Under roentgen television control, various biopsy insutruments then can be inserted through the theter into the tissues for collection of cell material. Application of the technique in a small series of patients indicates that it does not appear to have any serious risks, is rather easy to perform and causes little discomfort for the patient.
